This is mentorship. This is not university, and this is not an online course.
Each Lime Academy program combines practical skills – super-condensed, and immediately applicable – with the wisdom and personalized guidance of incredible performers who’ve done what you want to do. Your program begins with a 1-on-1 session with your mentor to understand your goals. The program then unfolds with a series of five masterclasses, where the mentor will dive deep into various topics, urging you to take action using the new tools you’ve been shown. Follow-up private sessions reinforce the masterclasses, molding the new tools to you and offering you personalized feedback to transform your performance.
Want to take your career to a whole new level? This is how.
• One 30-minute private mentoring session per week
• One 60-minute group masterclass per week
• Maximum 8 participants

MASTERCLASS BREAKDOWN
I. A New Foundation
We’ll start by recapping the pillars of improvisation, and then move into a fresh approach to the basics of melody, fueling your own creativity.
– New approaches to the basics: scales, arpeggios and chromaticism as they relate to melody
– Focusing on the interval of the 4th to start as well as develop your solo
II. Melodic Development
Melodic consistency is one of the unifying characteristics that all masters of improvisation possess. What is that, anyway? And how can we achieve it in our own playing?
– Expanding concepts from session I to form more complex melodies, and starting to address the phrasing and shape of your lines
– Revisiting additional scales: diminished, whole-tone, and bebop
– Digging into patterns to sound authentic in a jazz setting
III. Comping
Comping doesn’t necessarily need to be done via harmony; we can comp using short phrases or even silence, helping the music to breathe and allowing space to be filled by our fellow band members.
– Readdressing extensions and voicings, and developing a stable of advanced and harmonically dense chords and shapes
– Lining up some simple but effective comping rhythms, as well as touching on more advanced concepts and playing over the bar line
– Block chords and chordal soloing, a la Bill Evans
IV. Rhythm
Rhythm is a broad enough topic for its own program (or five). We’ll cover as much as we can to arm you with a whole different set of ideas for your solos.
– Revisiting syncopation, subdividing, and what it means to swing hard
– Rhythmically transposing a single melodic idea, as well as repeated licks and phrases in rock, pop and blues
– Using the clave and other Latin rhythms for additional variety
V. Reharmonization
As if you don’t already have enough options while soloing, we’ll look at changing certain chords in the context of a tune, as well as implying or adding extra chords in more static progressions.
– Reviewing voicings and shapes that are interchangeable and can be used in different contexts
– Guidelines for reharmonization and stimulating your own creativity
– Analyzing the emotions that certain chords evoke, and using that knowledge to make choices when reharmonizing and creating atmosphere
