This is mentorship. This is not university, and this is not an online course.
Each Lime Academy program combines practical skills – super-condensed, and immediately applicable – with the wisdom and personalized guidance of incredible performers who’ve done what you want to do. Your program begins with a 1-on-1 session with your mentor to understand your goals. The program then unfolds with a series of five masterclasses, where the mentor will dive deep into various topics, urging you to take action using the new tools you’ve been shown. Follow-up private sessions reinforce the masterclasses, molding the new tools to you and offering you personalized feedback to transform your performance.
Want to take your career to a whole new level? This is how.
• One 30-minute private mentoring session per week
• One 60-minute group masterclass per week

MASTERCLASS BREAKDOWN
I. Sing & Play
Singing makes us think about playing and comping in a different way, helping us to understand what’s important and increasing our capability to split our brains and multitask.
-Analyzing singing as it relates to harmony and melody
-Using singing as it relates to time: comping on time and singing “behind”, and vice versa.
II. Ballads & Harmony
Slow songs, regardless of the style, give us time to really maximize and enjoy harmony. Singers may hate us at first, but soon they won’t want it any other way.
-Adding more color with extensions and different voicings
-Altering chords and even completely reharmonizing the melody, where appropriate
III. Phrasing & Silence
Comping doesn’t necessarily need to be done via harmony; we can comp using short phrases or even silence, helping the music to breathe and allowing space to be filled by our fellow band members.
-Growing comfortable with space
-Carefully selecting the rhythmic moments to play your chords
-Comping with few or even single notes, as opposed to chords
IV. Emphasis & EmPHAsis
Knowing which elements to focus on will be crucial in making the song come alive.
-Development from the main ideas of the composition being performed
-Recognizing what makes a piece of music unique, and focusing on that
-Understanding the full spectrum of harmony and rhythm by exploring the extremes
V. Guiding & Leading
Thanks to cruise ships and Cirque du Soleil, I’ve had to face the responsibilities of being a bandleader; let’s spend some time understanding this important and delicate role.
-Hard skills: count-offs and conducting
-Soft skills: how to get the most out of your band
-How thinking like a bandleader will help your comping, and your playing, in general
