MASTERCLASS BREAKDOWN SESSION
I. Back to the Start
Following a recap of swing fundamentals, we’ll start by revisiting major chords and their treatment.
-New ways to think of swing articulation and phrasing
-A new approach to the major 7 chord, rooted in scale degrees
-Introducing basic chromaticism
II. Re-introducing the Minor
We’ll take a fresh look at various ways to treat minor chords, both independently and within the context of a ii-V progression.
-A new approach to jazz ideas and patterns over a minor chord
-Common — and less common — jazz ideas over ii-V
-Introducing the concept of melodic minor
III. And Now, the Dominant
We’ll get into treatment of the dominant chord, as well as connecting dominants with major and minor chords as we start to put ideas together over progressions.
-A new approach to concepts and patterns over a dominant chord
-Reviewing the bebop scale and kicking it up a notch
-Playing over a ii-V-I, incorporating concepts from sessions I and II
IV. Revisiting Diminished Harmony
We’ll achieve a more complex level of harmony by bringing diminished ideas into the mix.
-A fresh look at the diminished scale, maximizing the use of diminished patterns
-Resolving from a diminished pattern to a major or minor chord
-Tying in diminished harmony with the harmonic minor scale
V. Putting It All Together
We’ll look at applying the patterns, scales and harmony introduced in previous sessions as we analyze longer progressions and, ultimately, full tunes.
-Addressing progressions beyond ii-V-I and ii-V-i
-Linking mini-progressions to understand the harmonic path of a full tune
-Originality and creativity in the context of patterns and scales
